Managers and supervisors are critical to a successful employee engagement initiative. But they must ignore their own demons and listen to their better angels to be kind of change agents you need. Sadly, it is actually simpler for a many managers to bark orders and dole out punishment than build a trusting, supportive environment that fosters higher productivity and stimulates employee innovation. 

Managers are the face of the company to employees. They must be on board and committed for any employee engagement initiative to work. Understanding their concerns, biases and doubts can help you drown out those demons with the voices of their better angels energizing a culture of engagement in each department.
